Industry’s only complete solution for making LiDAR data immediately actionable premiered at DistribuTECH
HAMILTON, ONTARIO – January 31, 2012 – GeoDigital, the world leader in LiDAR and imaging technology, demonstrated its combined Grid^Intel Online (GIO) and WorkStudio solution last week during DistribuTECH at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The GIO to WorkStudio process represents the industry’s first complete, end-to-end solution to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) vegetation and engineering compliance requirements.
With the GeoDigital web-based work management tool, LiDAR survey data is quickly manipulated into logical, documented work plans that can be shared across utility departments. Foresters and engineers can readily identify vegetative threats, encroachments and maintenance issues, and recommend appropriate actions and priorities for rapid ROI. Crews and contractors receive detailed information about exactly the work that needs to be performed. All data captured throughout the work process can be quickly organized into NERC-compliant reporting formats.
“By making LiDAR information immediately actionable, utilities can manage risk, avoid potential compliance issues and optimize budget,” said GeoDigital International President and CEO, Alastair Jenkins. “Utilities have asked for this type of capability for years, which is what lead to GeoDigital’s interest in WorkStudio and acquisition of Powel, Inc. in December 2011.”
The new offering, combined with GeoDigital’s innovative LiDAR technology and analysis processes, offers an affordable LiDAR mapping program that integrates low cost periodic re-mapping and inspection of the structures and right-of-way. GeoDigital Solutions President Scott Rogers, agrees that the convergence ultimately led to the launch of a new solution. “Combining GeoDigital’s data acquisition technology and web-delivery with WorkStudio’s work management technology provides a turnkey solution for utilities to manage the maintenance of both their physical assets and their rights of way. It provides utilities all of the technology and all of the functionality that they need to meet the regulatory demands that they are facing today.” ###

Standards-based solution enables vital disaster response coordination among utilities and public security organizations based on IEC CIM and UICDS standards
LAFAYETTE, Cal. – January 23, 2012 – UISOL, the utility integration specialist, has launched a first-of-its-kind, integration software and services solution to enable utilities to optimize emergency preparedness and response with enhanced communication and interoperability. The solution draws on UISOL’s expertise with utility operations and smart grid standards, particularly IEC CIM standards, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Unified Incident Command and Decision Support (UICDS) standards.
“Just as adoption of CIM standards have transformed utility operational excellence, we believe the integration with UICDS will become the standard for event response programs in the smart grid era,” said Ali Vojdani, UISOL CEO. “This approach is poised to enable the creation of new and effective emergency response programs never possible before.”
As one of the first applications of UICDS for public/private data sharing, UISOL’s solution will empower utilities to achieve a new level of interoperability, including:
• Ability to share with public security organizations real-time operational information to improve coordination and effectiveness • No UICDS emergency operations network knowledge needed by the utility side • No utility operations systems knowledge needed by the emergency operations side • CIM message standardization means utility systems see only one interface • UICDS message standardization means emergency operations systems appear as one interface • Middleware solution – no change in daily operational interfaces, no need to learn a new system
Co-authors Mark Wald and Terry Nielsen of UISOL and James Morentz of SAIC will present the solution approach to the utility industry in the panel “Smart Grid Risk Mitigation,” Thursday January 26 at 9:30 a.m. at DistribuTECH in the San Antonio Convention Center. Visit booth 4503 for more information and a software demonstration. -####-

Launch of GridMaven Network Manager™ to provide end-to-end visibility as flagship product of a new breed of smart grid tools
Sunnyvale, CA – January 17, 2012 – GridMaven Utility Solutions, a division of SK Telecom Americas (SKTA), today announced the availability of GridMaven Network Manager™, an entirely new approach to optimizing utility smart grid communication networks. GridMaven Network Manager™ (GNM) is a powerful software product that sits atop utility communication networks, allowing operators to manage them as a system and ensuring real-time delivery of mission-critical data.
"GNM answers the need to validate and compare performance of communication networks and to utilize real-time, actionable data for greater reliability," said Paul Moon, Vice President of SKTA. "It enables utilities to realize the full benefits of their communications investments by allowing information to be shared across networks and silos – from legacy SCADA to distribution automation to new AMI/AMR networks." With GNM, utility network operators can evaluate performance claims, verify ongoing performance of network elements and triage faults more accurately and quickly.
